Here is a guide to firstly help you understand your prescription:
The overall power of your spectacle lens is measured in dioptres. This will either be shown as a + or - value depending on whether you are long or short sighted. The higher the number, the stronger the power.
This value will be present on a prescription if you have an Astigmatism. A very common visual defect simply meaning your eye is not completely spherical and so the light entering your eye is refracted differently and needs an additional power to correct it.
The degree at which your prescription is best placed to give you the clearest vision. You will not have an axis if you do not have a sphere.
An additional power added to a prescription for patients with Presbyopia. This is simply the ageing of the eye thus needing an extra magnification for reading/close work. If you need reading glasses or multifocals this should be included on your prescription.
Intermediate (inter add)
A slightly weaker version of a reading add, allowing a longer working distance for tasks at roughly arms length such as VDU/music.
This value is used to correct muscle imbalance. Less common in general prescriptions but if you have prism in your prescription it is important that this is included when ordering online.
To help you enter your prescription onto our website take a look at the examples below
You would enter this onto our website as below. Note we don't need the Near Add if you are ordering distance specs but do need it for reading or near specs.
- Notice how the signs are written ABOVE the numbers – it still means the same thing i.e. +/- signs.
- Also, the optician has written 125 instead of 1.25. You should enter it as '1.25' with a decimal point on our website.
- The prescription has only one value for Near ADD - this value should be entered for both eyes on our website.
On our website it would be entered as below. Note if ordering distance specs you can leave our website Near ADDition box empty.
This should be entered as below. Note if ordering distance specs you can leave our website Near ADDition box empty.
Notice how on this prescription the “additions” are placed quite far away from the rest of the prescription. This would be entered as below. Note if ordering distance specs you can leave our website Near ADDition box empty.
